Hundreds of thousands of Pakistanis visit the UK every year — for family, business and study. This guide explains exactly what travel insurance you need, what it should cover and how to get your certificate from Pakistan before you fly.
For a UK Standard Visitor Visa, travel insurance is not officially mandatory — unlike the Schengen visa which strictly requires it. However, the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) strongly recommends it, and including a travel insurance certificate in your application demonstrates financial responsibility and genuine visitor intent, which strengthens your case.
More importantly, travel insurance for the UK is essential for your own financial protection. Pakistani nationals visiting the UK are generally not entitled to free NHS treatment. A single hospital visit can cost £500–£2,000. An emergency surgery or a week in hospital can run to £20,000–£100,000 or more. Without insurance, you or your family would be personally responsible for these bills.

Pakistani visitors on a Standard Visitor Visa are generally not eligible for free NHS treatment. You may be asked to pay at the point of care. Your SGI travel insurance covers private medical treatment costs — hospital bills, doctor fees and prescriptions — so you can access care without worrying about the cost.
Note: Pakistani nationals who are also UK citizens or residents with Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) are generally entitled to NHS treatment and may not need travel insurance for medical purposes — but trip cancellation and baggage cover is still valuable.
Pre-existing conditions (diabetes, heart conditions, high blood pressure etc.) require declaration at the time of purchase. Some insurers exclude pre-existing conditions by default — SGI can advise on what can and cannot be covered based on your specific health situation. Always declare your conditions honestly — failing to do so can invalidate your claim.
For senior travellers or those with significant health conditions, a Premium plan with higher medical limits is strongly recommended for UK travel.
