First-Time Car Insurance in Pakistan — Your Complete Beginner's Guide (2026)

Buying car insurance for the first time in Pakistan can feel overwhelming. This guide breaks it all down — simply and honestly.

You have just bought your first car in Pakistan — or you are about to. Now everyone is telling you to get insurance, but nobody is explaining what it actually means, what it covers, or how to buy it without getting ripped off.

This guide cuts through the confusion. By the end, you will understand exactly what car insurance does, which type you need, what it costs, and how to arrange it quickly with no hassle.

Step 1: Understand what car insurance actually does

Car insurance is a financial protection product. You pay a relatively small amount per year (the premium). In return, the insurance company pays for large, unexpected costs — like repairing your car after an accident, paying you if your car is stolen, or compensating the person you accidentally injure or whose car you damage.

Without insurance, these costs come directly out of your pocket. A single serious accident in Pakistan can cost PKR 500,000 in repairs and third-party compensation — more than most people can pay without financial hardship.

Step 2: Comprehensive vs third-party — which do you need?

There are two main types of car insurance in Pakistan:

What it coversComprehensiveThird-party only
Your car — accident damage
Your car — theft and snatching
Your car — fire and flood
Others — injury or property damage you cause
Annual cost1.5–3% of car valueLower, but very limited
The simple rule:

If your car is worth more than PKR 1,000,000 — which describes almost every car in Pakistan today — get comprehensive insurance. Third-party only is only appropriate for very old, very low-value vehicles where you could afford to replace them yourself.

Step 3: Understand IDV (Insured Declared Value)

IDV is the single most important number in car insurance. It is your car's current market value — the amount the insurer will pay you if your car is stolen or declared a total loss after an accident.

Your annual premium is a percentage of your IDV. So if your car's IDV is PKR 3,000,000 and the rate is 2%, your annual premium is PKR 60,000.

Getting the IDV right matters:

Use our IDV Calculator to estimate your car's current market value.

Step 4: What documents do you need?

For your first car insurance policy in Pakistan, you will need:

  • CNIC copy (front and back) — your own if you are the registered owner
  • Vehicle registration book (log book) — confirms the engine number, chassis number and registered owner
  • Current market value of the car — this becomes your IDV
  • Bank hypothecation letter — only if the car is financed through a bank or leasing company

All documents can be submitted as WhatsApp photos — no originals required at the quoting stage.

Step 5: How much will your first car insurance cost?

Use this quick reference table:

Your car's value (IDV)Estimated annual premium
PKR 1,000,000PKR 15,000 – 30,000
PKR 2,000,000PKR 30,000 – 60,000
PKR 3,500,000PKR 52,500 – 105,000
PKR 5,000,000PKR 75,000 – 150,000
PKR 8,000,000PKR 120,000 – 240,000

Step 6: What about a GPS tracker?

For cars valued above approximately PKR 5–8 million, your insurer will typically require a GPS tracker. For lower-value cars it is optional.

A tracker costs approximately PKR 15,000–25,000 to buy and fit, plus an annual subscription of PKR 12,000–20,000. It can reduce your insurance premium slightly, and provides valuable theft-recovery capability.
